2 cups milk
2 cups water
1 o 1 1/2 tsps. salt
1 cup uncooked regular grits
1 cup whipping cream
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 to 2 tsps freshly ground pepper
Bring first 3 ingredients to a boil in a large saucepan; gradually stir in grits.
Reduce heat; simmer, stirring occasionally, 30 to 40 minutes, until thickened.
Stir in whipping cream, butter, and pepper.
Simmer, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes.
YIELD: 6 servings
NOTE: For thinner grits, stir in additional milk.
To lighten, use 1% milk, fat-free half and half for cream, and reduce butter to 2 Tbsp.
