Cheese and Potatoes Au Gratin


2 clove garlic, peeled

4 potatoes, peeled, thinly sliced

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon pepper

2 cups grated Gruyère cheese

4 cups whipping cream


Preheat oven to 375°F.

Rub the bottom and sides of a 3-quart baking dish with the cut sides of garlic cloves, leaving the garlic cloves in the dish.

Sprinkle potatoes with salt and pepper. Layer half in the baking dish. Sprinkle half of the Gruyere cheese over the potatoes followed by half of the cream. Repeat the layers with remaining half of ingredients.

Bake uncovered 1 hour or more until the top is browned and the cream has cooked down to a thick sauce. During the first 30 minutes of cooking, use a broad spatula to push the top layers of potatoes into the cream frequently. Serve hot.
